On Saturday, August 29th, from 11am until 5pm, the inaugural Saunooke Village Folk Festival will premiere on the cobbled streets of the village. Located just off Highway 441N, at the corner of Acquoni Road and Big Cove Road in Cherokee, NC, this first festival will feature Catch the Spirit of Appalachia’s Traditional Heritage Walk. Demonstrators in traditional dress will start on the front porch of Four Season’s Christmas Shoppe, and then spread out into the village area.

Old Time Craft Demonstrations
Among the many demonstrators will be chair caner David Ammons, originally from Tuckasegee, who learned this old time craft as a child from watching his grandfather “bottom” a chair.  Diane Ellis from Robbinsville, who will demonstrate rug braiding, is a featured demonstrator at the North Carolina State Fair. Jacqueline Fisher of Cullowhee demonstrates the art of Appalachian
Corn Shudavidammonsck Dolls, while exemplifying in dress and campsite the 18th century pioneer.  Nan Smith of Sylva will be crocheting, Debbie Oriel will have Embroidery-on-Denim items, and Dot Conner will share her collection of vintage aprons. Both ladies are also from Sylva.
Ron Yount, a wood carver from Cullowhee, specializes in creative carving with what he calls “Spirit Faces,” and making pioneer toys such as  a Gee Haw Whimmy-Diddle—where a notched stick is rubbed with a smaller stick to crank a propeller at the end; and a Bull Roarer.  Ron says, “A Bull Roarer is when you get a piece of wood about this long and this wide...you put it on a string, pull it really fast and it roars!”
Bringing the art of wood turning will be Ron Thompson from Alarka. Ron spends a lot of time finding just the right kind of wood for his work, which many times is from the Cherry tree. He makes all sizes of bowls, plus is also a whizz at smaller items such as wooden jar toppers,  games for children, pens and other interesting wooden handmade products.
An illustrator of mountain places and scenes that tell a story, Doreyl Ammons Cain began drawing in the dirt at 4 years old in Tuckasegee. Her fingers now take on the colors of the rainbow as she demonstrates her work with pastel chalk. Cheryl Thompson, potter from Balsam,  will also be a demonstrator at the festival, sharing her unique style of pottery. And, Stephen J. Chilingirian from Zirconia, NC, will be on hand to showcase his hand forged decorative wrought iron sculptures with the "Art of Steeling."

Books by local authors
Catch the Spirit of Appalachia is constantly working to save the local stories and heritage by publishing local writers. Among the authors who will be on hand at the Saunooke Village Folk Festival will be Edwina Crowe Jones  “Return to Riverside”;  Nancy Pafford “White Feather,” Cherokee Rose,” “Oscar”; Amy Ammons Garza ‘s trilogy of her family stories plus “Matchbox Mountain”; Linda Owen Vinson with “A Pinch from the Little Brown Jar”; and Harold Sims “Cats Without Cages.”

Entertainment will fill the day
Inside Four Seasons Christmas Shoppe will be Jo Northup and Milt Crotts who play regularly at the Biltmore House in Asheville. Jo plays the hammer dulcimer and flute...and sings; Milt accompanies her with the guitar and mandolcello. They will have CD’s for sale. And Santa will be in the house!! The children will find Santa and Mrs. Claus ready and waiting to hear what they want for Christmas.
And toping off the entertainment will be a special performance of the “Voices of our Young Mountaineers”—featuring The Rye Holler Boys from Bryson City and Sylva, and other young people who are up and coming stars of tomorrow. (See the list of entertainers in the sidebar.) Radio personality Neal Hearn will be the Emcee.
So come out and be a part of the first Saunooke Village Folk Festival and experience music, written works, and crafts representing the past, the present and future of Appalachian Traditions...while exploring the established businesses of Saunooke Village.  There’ll be grilled hot dogs, and lots of excitement!  For more information, call Ann Cooper at 828-497-2207.
